Tabon, and Israeli kosher bakery, has

opened in San Francisco.

The bakery, started by

a former Israeli diamond dealer,

has been producing 1,000 pitas a day,

as well challah, pita, bagels, babka,

rugelach, bourekas, and sufganiyot.

The recipes originated from

pastry chef Yanni’s great-grandfather,

a Jewish baker who

moved to Israel from Iraq,

and ran a bakery in the Machane Yehuda market

in Jerusalem.

The Jewish community is sighing in

relief as its only other kosher bakery,

Grand Bakery, in Oakland, is closing.
